Gypsy Hippie Chicken Monger.....

Good news! My county approved an ordinance where I can have chickens in my backyard! Um, yeah! Call me strange, but as a girl that grew up on an island, in a yellow tin house with chickens all around... I kinda like the idea. My neighbors? Maybe not so much...

Farm fresh eggs anyone? I can even tell you how to determine which eggs are going to be female chickens and which ones roosters, before they hatch. A trick taught to me by my grandfather. Gracias Abuelito! You never want too many roosters. First they wake up way too early and they are aggressive bunch.

The eggs have to be under the hen for about two days before you can tell. You usually would not be able to tell with eggs from your grocery store because they take them away much too quickly for you to be able to tell. But if you are curious...this is how you would know.

If you take an egg up to a bright light, like the sun, say for instance...... look for the yolk, concentrate by looking right at the top of the yolk. If you see a space resembling a bubble directly on top of the yolk. It will be a boy!!! A rooster.

If you notice the bubble of air on top of the yolk, sits on its side (either left or right) it will be a girl! or a chicken or hen! See! I could be a certified Gypsy Hippie Chicken Monger and I would seal my reputation in the neighborhood by wearing an apron and share eggs, much like people who share their tomatoes or squash.

Yeah...Gypsy Hippie Chicken Monger..has a nice ring to it!

Sweet. Hope the chicken raising is going well. My little man likes chickens a lot. He calls them "bok boks" and loves watching them on TV and online. Hope you had a great Christmas with your girls, and the new year is going well. Take care.

I'd love to live in ur neighborhood! you could trade me some eggs for veggies......... or who knows, since the ordinace was passed, i'd probably join you and raise some chicks of my own. my hubs has been wanting to do that for the longest......but it's against the rules here. =(
